Noblesville has a separate toter for recycling that is picked up every other week. Works well. It has a yellow lid so trash trucks can tell the difference. Boxes can be broken down and placed in the recycle toter curbside.
We need some sort of bag to use to get trash from house to totes. My trash can inside is much to heavy for me to lift. Would recyclable bags be an option?
Hi, Sandy! I use biodegradable trash bags that I get at Meijer. Meijer also has these humongous paper bags that are intended for yard clippings, etc, but could be perfect for your recyclables. You could stand one up in your garage or pantry, etc. and put your recyclables in it. I use those big paper bags for parties, etc. to cut down on plastic trash bags.
Kudos to Mr. Donati for his work on the recycling program. It's such a simple thing to do. I have a separate receptacle in my kitchen for recyclables. It's a tall, round laundry hamper. I also use biodegradable trash bags that I get at Meijer. I don't know that they're actually biodegradable or good for the environment, but I have to believe they are better than regular plastic trash bags. Meijer and other stores also carry huge paper bags for yard clippings, etc. I use those for parties. They could also be used for your recycling. Just stand one up in the garage.
I'd say Jason is trying to build or build up the recycling community in Muncie. Here's an additional comment he made that I forgot to include in the story: "In the future, if we were to go to an opt-in separate recycling toter, we would have people take a pledge and go through some sort of “Do’s and Don’t’s” training to help make sure they knew how the new program would work. By opting in, we would also collect their contact info and do consistent communication pieces to update them on recycling information and changes."
In Anderson we have been using separate ‘’toters’’ for recycling for years. Our recycling goes to Muncie for processing. The biggest problem I see with it is that so many people use it as an additional trash bin. My clean recycling is dumped into the same truck as a neighbor’s recycling bin that is full of sloppy, nasty trash! At least your blue bags would keep clean recycling clean!
Thank you for the coverage, Seth! There is a lot of great feedback and discussion in this comment section as well. Please keep the feedback coming. We want to hear from everyone! As mentioned, please feel free to email me at jdonati@msdeng.com or call 765-213-6450.

Does Noblesville pick up trash/garbage every other week, too, or weekly? Two weeks seems fine for recyclables, maybe not for garbage.
They pick up trash every week, recyclables every other week on the same day as trash day, different truck.
I'll pass that along. One alternative here was trash every other week and recyclable every other week. That sounds too long between trash pickups

P.S. I have a tall, round laundry hamper that I put next to our trash can for recyclables.
Great reportage, Seth. Muncie needs you. I read everything you publish.
Thanks, Nancy; I do this to try to stay sharp because I don't like crossword puzzles or Soduku or whatever it's called

I’m in favor of toters. Not so much in favor of alternating weeks for trash and recycling.
